RO Membrane Guide: 75 GPD vs 80 GPD vs 100 GPD & When to Change
Everything about GPD ratings, thin-film composite (TFC) sheets, and choosing the right membrane for your water pressure.
Executive Summary
The RO membrane does 95% of the purification work. Learn how Gallons Per Day (GPD) ratings impact your purification speed and how to pair the right Flow Restrictor (FR) to prevent premature scaling.
What does GPD mean?
GPD stands for Gallons Per Day. 1 US Gallon equals approximately 3.785 Litres. A 75 GPD membrane produces about 280 litres of pure water in 24 hours (approx. 11.5 litres per hour). An 80 GPD produces ~12.5 L/hr, and a 100 GPD produces ~15.5 L/hr.
Choosing the right GPD rating
For homes with 3 to 5 family members, a 75 or 80 GPD membrane paired with a standard 24V 75 GPD booster pump is optimal. For large joint families or high daily consumption (>30 litres/day), upgrade to a 100 GPD membrane paired with a 100 GPD pump and an SMPS of 2.5A.
The Crucial Role of Flow Restrictor (FR)
The Flow Restrictor creates the back-pressure inside the membrane housing required to push pure water through the semi-permeable sheet while allowing reject water to flush away concentrated brine. Matching is critical:
• 75 GPD Membrane: pair with FR 450
• 80 GPD Membrane: pair with FR 500 or FR 550
• 100 GPD Membrane: pair with FR 600 or FR 650
Pro Technician Tip
- NEVER reuse an old FR when installing a brand-new membrane. A scaled FR will choke the new membrane within 30 days.
Why Low Pressure Ruins Membranes
RO membranes require minimum operating pressure of 40 to 60 PSI (provided by the booster pump). If the inlet pressure is weak or the pump diaphragm is worn, water cannot pass efficiently, causing fast mineral deposition and irreversible fouling.
Step-by-step Replacement Safety Rules
Always flush carbon fines for 5 minutes before routing water to the new membrane housing. Carbon dust will instantly plug membrane pores if entered directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Only if your booster pump can output sufficient pressure and current (minimum 100 GPD rated pump and 2.5A SMPS). Otherwise, the larger membrane will underperform.
